The East of England Co-op is East Anglia’s largest independent retailer, with over 230 branches across Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire. They run a wide range of businesses, including food, funeral services, stone masonry, security, travel, property and events.
They are said to be delighted to be able to participate in the New Anglia levy sharing scheme, transferring up to 25% of their levy to support local businesses.
Positively, the Co-op has turned paying the Apprenticeship Levy into a benefit, carefully targeting areas of the business with the most need.
With currently 70 apprentices, the Co-op apprenticeship programme consists of ten pathways, from level three to level seven – equivalent to a masters’ degree.
“Our programme has provided opportunities for employees in the most junior roles to gain new skills and qualifications,” said Effie Burrell, the Co-op’s Learning and Development Consultant. “Eventually, many apprentices are promoted into more senior roles, which is why apprenticeships form a key part of our ambitions for growth and sustainability.”
“We’ve found that colleagues that have been promoted via the apprenticeship programme are more skilled and typically more competent than their predecessors, allowing them to step into their new role and hit the ground running.”
